Red fox

( Vulpes vulpes )

Red foxes come in many colors. The common red fox is reddish-brown on the body and white on the chest and belly. No matter what color-variant the fox is, the tip of the tail is always white. Foxes are by no means picky and eat almost anything. The fox’s favorite food is small rodents, such as mice, but it also eats birds, insects and fruit. Hence, red foxes are incredibly adaptable and live almost everywhere – even in the middle of the city.

Habitat

The fox is good at varying its food, and usually only eats what is most available. The fox mainly lives on, for example, shrews, moles and wild lamb. When possible, it eats birds and bird eggs as well as reptiles, amphibians and fish. The fox can also catch a deer if the deer is weak or sick. In the summer months, the fox also supplements its diet with insects and in the autumn with berries and fruit. The red fox is not always red The fox is a medium-sized predator in the canine family. It is slender, has a broad head and pointed snout, and its eyes are narrow, slit-shaped with vertical pupils. A female fox weighs about 7 kg and a male fox about 8 kg. There is one fixed characteristic of a fox, – the tip of the tail. Regardless of the fox’s other fur color, the tip of the tail is always white, but otherwise the fox can have many different colors. The 3 color variants are called common red fox, silver fox and bog fox and they all live in the Scandinavian nature. The common red fox has a reddish-brown fur and is white on the chest. The silver fox is dark gray and the bog fox is like the common red fox reddish-brown, but unlike this one is black/dark gray on the chest.
